Many passengers were stuck while computers and security scanners stopped working, as a blackout hit the international terminal of Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City in the small hours of Wednesday morning.

The power outage happened at Terminal T2 at 2:35 am.

Passengers had to walk in the dark or the dim light of their smartphone flashlights.

Some navigated their way through car headlights while just a few emergency lights were switched on at the airport.

Five minutes after the outage, T2’s entire emergency lighting system was turned on but its vicinity was still in darkness.

“There was no problem when I got in line for entry procedures,” Nguyen Khoi, who touched down from Canada, said.

“But when I picked up my luggage and already got it through the security scanner, the power was suddenly cut.

“There was a long way for many other people who were still queuing up for customs and luggage scanning.

“I had to borrow a phone to call my family to pick me up since there was no Wi-Fi connection because of the power cut.”

The airport had suffered another outage on October 18, 2018, causing damage and a nuisance for passengers.

Tan Son Nhat is the busiest airport in Vietnam, handling 38 million passengers last year.
